On the brink of one of the largest victories ever recorded for a Democratic
candidate for governor, FDR stops to talk with a voter after casting his
ballot in the 1930 New York gubernatorial elections. First elected in 1928,
Roosevelt campaigned to fight the Depression in New York with tax relief
for farmers, low-cost public utilities and the country's first state relief
agency, which would secure him national attention as a possible contender for
president.
